Abstract
Magnesium sulphate is produced by treating calcined magnesium oxide-containing materials with sulphurous acid containing sulphur trioxide to form a solution of normal magnesium sulphite and sulphate, oxidizing by a gaseous oxidizing agent to the sulphate, and crystallizing. Suitable magnesium oxide - containing materials are serpentine, magnesite and brucite. The sulphur dioxide employed may be obtained by roasting pyritic material, enough being used to dissolve all metals and a small amount of the silica present. Oxidation may be effected by the passage of, or spraying the solution into, air or ozonized air. Manganous sulphate may be present as a catalyst. Oxidation may be completed by ozone, chlorine or a hypochlorite. Iron sulphate may be removed as hydroxide from the oxidized solution by the addition of magnesium oxide or original calcine. Silica and calcium sulphate may be removed by concentration and filtration. The insoluble matter after treatment with sulphurous acid need not be removed until after precipitation of the ferric hydroxide. Specifications 597,028, 603,779 and U.S.A. Specification 1,865,224 are referred to.
