Abstract

Anhydrous calcium sulphate is obtained by heating a calcium sulphate-calcium sulphite sludge in an oxidizing atmosphere to a temperature of between 900 and 1000 DEG C. The sludge is obtained in the removal of sulphur dioxide from flue gases by treatment thereof with an aqueous suspension containing lime or calcium carbonate. The calcium sulphate produced is suitable for the manufacture of plasters of the accelerated anhydrite type such as are described in Specifications 236,695 and 317,672, [both in Class 22], wherein the setting properties are due to the hydration of anhydrous calcium sulphate under the influence of accelerators such as alkali metal salts and certain sulphates. In an example, the slurry is passed through a rotary kiln in countercurrent to combustion gases from a furnace burning powdered fuel with excess of air. The product is mixed with 2 per cent of potassium p sulphate and 1 per cent of zinc sulphate. Characteristics of the resultant plaster are given.
