Abstract
514,993. Sulphur dioxide; lime. MANN, A. N. April 19, 1938, Nos. 11690/38 and 11527/39. [A Specification was laid open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, Oct. 17, 1938.] [Classes 1 (ii) and 1 (iii)] In the reduction of calcium sulphate by means of carbon to yield sulphur.dioxide and lime, the proportion of carbon.is between 0.55 and 0.7 atoms per molecule of calcium sulphate. The furnace atmosphere is so adjusted that there is sufficient oxygen to convert all the carbon monoxide evolved during the reaction to dioxide, but insufficient to cause sintering of the charge. The Provisional Specifications extend the invention to barium and strontium sulphates.
