524,237. Aluminates ; sulphur dioxide. CARPMAEL, A. (I.G. Farbenindustrie Akt.- Ges.). Jan. 24, 1939, No. 2506. [A Specification was laid open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, Aug. 3, 1939.]. [Classes 1 (ii) and 1 (iii)] [Also in Group V] Alkali metal aluminates, sulphur dioxide and cement are obtained by mixing a material containing 1 mol. of Al 2 O 3 3 to 0.6-6, preferably 1-4 mols. of SiO 2 , with calcium sulphate in the proportions of 1 mol. of Al 2 O 3 to 1.8-2.2 mols. of CaO, and 1 mol. of SiO 2 2 to 1.8-2.2 mols. of CaO, and 4-6 per cent. of carbon on the calcium sulphate, sintering (1200-1500‹C.) in a slightly oxidizing atmosphere, lixiviating with a solution of an alkali salt which yields on double decomposition a slightly soluble calcium salt, separating the alkali aluminate solution, and sintering and grinding the washed residue. The yield of alumina is controlled by the temperature and time of sintering, and by the alkali content of the lixiviating solution.
