Abstract
A composite calcium sulphate, zinc sulphide white pigment is prepared by reacting zinc sulphate and calcium hydrosulphide using an excess of soluble zinc, the soluble calcium sulphide being eliminated without the introduction of free sulphuric acid, and then calcining the product. The process may be carried out by adding to the product before calcining a small portion of zinc sulphate followed after a short interval by adding calcium carbonate slurry, zinc sulphate and calcium carbonate additions being continued until the elimination of hydrogen sulphide and free sulphuric acid is complete when a final excess of zinc sulphate solution may be added. This excess may be sufficient to produce a pH of about four while a small amount of cobalt ammonium sulphate may be added to the zinc sulphate. Air may be admitted to the calcining furnace to eliminate calcium sulphide but is kept at a minimum to avoid zinc oxide formation; the calcined product may be quenched with water to form a slurry and sulphuric or other mineral acid added until the slurry reacts acid to an indicating means, preferably methyl orange.
