Abstract

Sodium or potassium monochromate solutions are reduced with sodium or potassium monosulphide, yielding chromic hydroxide, alkali sulphate and alkali hydroxide. The latter is separated and used in known methods of chromate production or other well-known technical applications, if desired after conversion to carbonate, bicarbonate, acetate or the like. The precipitated chromic hydroxide may be ignited e.g. at 900 DEG C. to yield a pigment or converted into soluble chromium salts by adding the appropriate acid. The Specification as open to inspection under Section 91 describes also the reduction of chromates and dichromates of ammonium, calcium, strontium, barium, magnesium or lead by sulphides, or their oxidation products, e.g., thiosulphates or polythionates. This subject matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 18,743/98, [Class 41], and 336,671, [Class 1 (iii)]
