Abstract
Alkali metal chromates are produced by heating at above 1000 DEG C. in the presence of air, a mixture of chromium ore &c., an alkali or alkali salt, lime or a lime-containing body, e.g. dolomite, the silica content being adjusted to a predetermined value by the addition of silica or a silica compound, e.g. talc, so that substantially all the chromium is converted to alkali chromate. The silica content required increases as the ratio Al2O3/CaO increases to 1/3 , and thereafter decreases as the ratio increases further. The quantity of alkali used should be greater than that theoretically necessary for binding the chromium. In an example, employing 1 part Cr2O3, 2 parts sodium carbonate and 4 parts lime and alumina mixture, the silica requirement for maximum yield is 0.7, 1.2, 2.0 and 1.0 for an Al2O3/CaO rato of 1/16 , 1/7 , \ba1/3 and 1/2 respectively.
