569,744. Distilling magnesium. INTERNATIONAL ALLOYS, Ltd., PRYTHERCH, W. E., and DILNOT, S. Nov. 10, 1943, No. 18653. [Class 82 (i)] A process for the production of magnesium by thermal reduction of magnesia-containing material with a reducing agent containing aluminium or silicon or both, characterised by the addition of lime to the reaction mixture substantially in stoichiometrical proportions according to the equations, When silica is present in the starting materials, further lime is added to convert it to dicalcium silicate. When a magnesia-containing material is used which contains lime, adjustment is made by the addition of lime or magnesia to give the required proportions of each in the reaction mixture.
