Abstract

An improved high alumina cement is obtained by treating a high alumina slag in the molten state with 0,5-10% by weight of carbon to reduce the alkali metal content. The slag used is usually a phosphorus furnace slag and should not contain more than 10% by weight of silica calculated as SiO2; any fluorine present should not exceed 3,5% when the silica content is less than 5% by weight, and 2,5% when the silica content is 5-10% by weight. The slag is heated in a furnace to 1500-1800 DEG C., the carbon, preferably powdered anthracite, being added prior to or during the heating. After reduction the slag is cooled, ground and packaged as a cement. Specification 747,016 is referred to.
