Abstract
A heat cast refractory substance particularly for use in glass-melting furnaces comprises alumina, preferably a mixture of the a and b forms, with smaller amounts of an alkali metal oxide, an acid oxide, and calcium, strontium, or barium oxide. The alkali metal oxide may be sodium or potassium oxide, and the acid oxide silica or titania. The modifying oxides may be present in from 4 to 7 per cent of the total composition, with the alkali metal oxide forming 3 - 6 1/2 (preferably approximately 5) per cent and at least two-thirds of the modifying oxides, the acid oxide forming 1 - 2 per cent and the alkaline earth metal oxide forming 0.1 - 0.4 per cent.
