Abstract
A process of manufacturing heat refractory castings containing over 50 per cent of crystalline zirconia and corundum together, in a siliceous non-crystalline matrix and in which the silica content of the refractory as a whole is between 5.66 and 17 per cent, that of the zirconia is between 5 and 60.1 per cent, and that of the alumina between 28 and 83.1 per cent, is characterized by controlling the composition of the said matrix by including in the batch to be melted anti-cracking agents; namely, one or more oxides selected from the group consisting of the oxides of potassium, sodium, magnesium, calcium and iron oxide aggregating not less than 1 per cent or more than 6.58 per cent of the total of the batch in such amounts that three times the sum of sodium oxide and potassium oxide plus the sum of such amounts of magnesia, lime, as may be present, three-quarters of the iron oxide that may be present, constitute not less than 17 per cent or more than 55 per cent by weight of all of the ingredients other than zirconia and alumina, all as determined by analyses. Numerous examples of compositions are given.
