Abstract
Ultramarine is prepared by heating a mixture containing an alumino-silicate, sulphur and an organic salt of an alkali or alkaline earth metal in the absence of oxidizing conditions at above 600 DEG C for 20 minutes to three hours changing the ambient atmosphere to oxidizing conditions, heating between 450 DEG and 900 DEG C. for one-half to three hours, and cooling, washing and p grinding the product. An alkali or alkaline earth aluminate such as sodium aluminate and silicate may be used as the alumino-silicate, in the ratio of two to three parts of silica per part of alumina. The alumino-silicate may be clay calcined for one to three hours to between 550 DEG C and 950 DEG C and digested with caustic soda, in excess. This treated clay may be washed and intimately mixed with sodium salt, sulphur and finely divided silica in amount up to 30 per cent of the calcined clay. The oxidizing conditions may be produced by admission of air and/or an oxidizing gas such as oxides of sulphur or nitric oxide.
