Abstract

Hydrogen and carbon oxides are formed by effecting the hydrocarbon-steam reforming reaction in presence of a catalyst prepared by admixing a nickel compound (the oxide or a compound convertible thereto by heating in air) with alumina or magnesia and with a binder, and sufficient water to provide a dough-like mass, shaping, calcining the shapes to incipient fusion and grinding the calcined product. A ball clay, kaolin or bentonite may be used as an additional component of the catalyst mixture. The binder has the composition CaO 60-67%, SiO2 18,5-25,5%, Al2O3 3-7,5%, MgO 0,5-5,5%, other metal oxides (impurities, e.g. Fe2O3, alkali and alkaline earth metal oxides excluding CaO) balance; it is prepared by calcining to incipient fusion a mixture of calcaveous and argillaceous materials and grinding the product. Examples are given.
