Abstract

1499601 Methane RHEINISCHE BRAUNKOHLENWERKE AG and FRIEDRICH UHDE GmbH 5 March 1976 [8 March 1975 14 July 1975] 09025/76 Heading C5E Methane is produced by reacting at an elevated temperature hydrogen and an oxide of carbon in the presence of a catalyst comprising up to 30 wt. per cent nickel oxide on an inert metal oxide support free from acid functions which has been calcined at 1000‹ C. or more. The reaction may be carried out at 350-950‹ C. in the presence of not more than 0À3 parts by volume of steam by vol. of dry gas or at 250-700‹ C. in the absence of steam. The catalyst support may be Al 2 O 3 , MgO, CaO or SiO 2 optionally with a binder such as calcium aluminate cement. The catalyst may also contain a small amount of potassium oxide. The CO content of the feed gas may be 3-50% by volume. The CO 2 content is immaterial but the feed gas may be virtually free from CO 2 .
