Abstract
A catalyst system for use in the catalytic high pressure reforming of petroleum hydrocarbons by steam comprises a first bed of a catalytic material comprising 1.2 to 3.0% of NiO and/or CoO, and a ceramic support of [alpha] Al 2 O 3 with a purity of at least 99.5%, a specific surface of 0.06 to 0.3m2gm-1 and containing an alkali metal compound and/or an alkaline earth metal compound with or without MgO and a binder or a plasticiser, and a second bed of catalytic material which is conventionally used in the conversion of natural gas or methane-rich gases by steam and/or carbon dioxide into hydrogen and carbon monoxide, and may have a NiO content of 20%.
