Abstract

A nickel alumina catalyst is prepared by precipitating basic nickel carbonate with ammonium carbonate or bicarbonate on finely divided alumina hydrate of about 10 mesh by a process similar to that described in U.S.A. Specification 2,570,882. After drying and calcining, the mixture is mixed with 5 per cent of a volatilizable lubricant such as a high melting point wax, the resulting product pelleted, the lubricant removed by heating to a temperature of 500 DEG C. in the presence of oxygen and the pellets finally heated to 1050 DEG C. to harden by sintering. A preferred catalyst contains 75 per cent NiO and 25 per cent Al2O3.
