Abstract
A lightweight filler material for paints, putties &c. is formed from a mass of multicellular glass-like particles. Glass, quartz or ceramic materials are pulverized and mixed with a finely-ground foaming agent such as carbon black, comminuted coke, silicon carbide, carbonates, natural or synthetic resins, or wax, and consolidated by sintering; the resin or wax may act as a binding agent as well as providing the carbon to act as the foaming agent when decomposed at the sintering temperature. The mass is then comminuted, either by grinding or by sudden cooling of the sintered mass, and the particles are coated with a separating-material, such as kaolin or quartz powder, to prevent sticking together during the subsequent heating in a neutral or reducing atmosphere to a temperature sufficiently high to render the glass plastic and cause the carbon and residual sulphur trioxide in the glass to react. If a thicker outer skin is desired, the first part of the heating is carried out in an oxidizing atmosphere to remove the carbon from the surface portions.
