Abstract
1297158 UO 2 and U 3 O 8 NUKEM NUKLEAR - CHEMIE UND METALLURGIE GmbH 12 Nov 1969 55386/69 Heading C1A In a process for the preparation of a sinterable material from waste ceramic UO 2 , the waste ceramic UO 2 is worked up into a UO 2 or U 3 O 8 powder with a particle size of less than 150 Á by (a) oxidation of waste UO 2 in an oxidizing atmosphere into finely divided pure U 3 O 8 powder with optional reduction to UO 2 powder, or by (b) treatment of a UO 2 grinding slurry with steam or water vapour at elevated-temperature to remove grinding oil and produce a UO 2 powder, or by (c) drying a UO 2 grinding slurry into a UO 2 powder; and mixing the UO 2 or U 3 O 8 powder produced in steps (a), (b) or (c) with sinterable UO 2 powder in an amount such that the mixture contains at least 80% by weight of sinterable UO 2 .
