Abstract

PURPOSE: To liquefy coal directly, by forming a paste from a finely pulverized coal, mixing oil and a disposable catalyst consisting of an iron ore powder treated with activating water and sulfur, and reacting the resultant paste with hydrogen under a high temperature and pressure.
CONSTITUTION: (A) 10W50pts.wt. finely pulverized coal having a particle size ≤about 60 mesh is uniformly mixed with (B) 90W50pts.wt. mixing oil having a boiling point of about 300W380°C and (C) a disposable catalyst consisting of an iron ore powder treated with activating water and sulfur in an amount of 0.03W 0.3pt.wt. based on one pt.wt. coal, to form a paste. The resultant paste is then reacted at a hydrogen partial pressure of about 15.0W30.0MPa and a temperature of about 420W470°C preferably for 10W15min to liquefy the coal directly. The treatment of the iron ore with the activating water is carried out by treating the iron ore powder with boiling water for 30minW2hr, and drying the treated iron ore powder.
