Abstract

Calcium oxide is prepared by briquetting powdered calcium carbonate, hydroxide or oxide, heating it at a temperature at which sintering does not occur until water and/or carbon dioxide have been expelled, and then raising the temperature to cause sintering. The briquettes are heated at 400 DEG to 600 DEG C. in the case of calcium hydroxide, and at 800 DEG to 900 DEG C. in the case of calcium carbonate, for 1 to 2 hours, and then sintered at 1100 DEG to 1600 DEG C. Anthracite or coke may be mixed with the material before briquetting when the product is to be used for the manufacture of calcium carbide.
