Abstract
In the production of dense low porosity iron powder from sponge iron the latter is annealed in uncrushed lump form or in pellets or briquettes under a reducing or inert atmosphere, and is then crushed to the desired particle size. Annealing should be at a temperature of 1000 DEG C. or over, and the sponge iron is preferably in the form of lumps of 10 mm. to 50 mm. diameter. For powder metallurgy use, the crushed powder is annealed at above 10 DEG C. above the recrystallisation temperature and then crushed to less than 0.5 mm. particle size.
