Abstract

Substantially pure titanium, in a form which is incapable of being crushed to fine powder, is treated with hydrogen, which is free from oxygen and nitrogen, in such a manner that the titanium absorbs sufficient hydrogen to render it brittle, the hydrogenated titanium being then crushed to powder and then heated in the loose or compacted state in vacuum or an inert atmosphere to remove the hydrogen. The titanium, which may be in a porous form, is preferably subjected, prior to treatment with hydrogen, to a preliminary treatment to remove impurities and to activate its surface, e.g. by heating in vacuum at about 700 DEG C. The metal may then be heated in hydrogen at a temperature between 400 DEG C. and 700 DEG C. till saturated with hydrogen, then cooled in hydrogen so that the product contains 2-4 per cent by weight of hydrogen. The hydrogenated titanium after crushing and, if desired, mixing with alloying constituents may be compacted and heated to expel hydrogen and then further heated to cause the metal to sinter.
