Abstract

Articles of manufacture are produced by sintering together under pressure a powder mixture comprising 2-8 per cent. nickel, 0.2-1.4 per cent. manganese, 0.08-1.0 per cent. graphite, the remainder being soft iron. The nickel, manganese and graphite should be sufficiently fine to pass completely through a 300 mesh sieve. The manganese may be introduced into the mixture in the form of manganese carbonate. Sintering may be carried out by subjecting the mixture to a pressure of at least 35 tons per square inch at a temperature of substantially 1,300 DEG C. for at least one hour. This operation may be carried out in a reducing atmosphere, for example, one consisting of 75 per cent. hydrogen and 25 per cent. nitrogen.
