Abstract
571,676. Alloys. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd., GRACE, B. B., and MILLS, E. Nov. 19, 1943, No. 19374. [Classes 72 and 82 (i)] [Also in Group XXII] Magnetic articles are made of an alloy of 30-70 per cent iron and 30-70 per cent cobalt, by pressing the powdered alloy or the mixed finely-divided constituents to shape under pressures of from 10-30 tons per square inch at temperatures of from 400‹ C. to 800‹ C. and sintering. Manganese up to 0.75 per cent, vanadium up to 2.75 per cent, silicon and carbon up to 0.2 and 0.8 per cent respectively, may also be included. The density of the product can be increased by cold forging or by hot forging at temperatures of from 500‹ C. to 900‹ C. Heat treatment at 850‹-940‹ C. for about 5 minutes followed by quenching improves the magnetic properties of the product. After quenching the article may be annealed at 780‹-810‹ C. The heat treatment may be carried out in a 50 cycles per second magnetic field which is applied in the same direction as the field to be applied during the use of the article. An atmosphere of towns gas, hydrogen or ammonia may be used to protect the alloy during the heating operations. Specification 404,011 is referred to.
