Abstract
1,264,482. Cu infiltrated ferrous base alloy. AMSTED INDUSTRIES Inc. Feb.3, 1969, No.5740/69. Heading C7D. A ferrous base alloy containing in wt per cent 0À2-1 C, 10-25 Cu, 0À05-5 Mn and at least two of 0À05-5 Al, 0À05-5 Sn, 0À005-2 Si and 0À05-5 Ni is made by infiltrating a green or sintered Fe-C compact with Cu and the other elements which are in powder compact form. Cr, C and Fe may also be included in the Cu compact, the Cr + Mn content of the alloy being 0À05-5%. The Cu compact is placed on the Fe-C compact and infiltration carried out in a single or two stage process under vacuum or a protective atmosphere, preferably by passing through a continuous belt furnace with an initial heating zone at 1500‹ F., and a final zone at 2075‹ F. The infiltrated alloys may be heat treated to 1500‹ F., oil quenched and then tempered.
