Abstract

A white cast iron with a substantially uniformly distributed martensitic structure comprises:- Mn 1À5-6% C 2 -4% substantially all of which is combined as carbide, Si 0-2% Cu present up to 2À5% Mo 0-1% the balance, apart from incidental impurities, being iron, and has a high uniform hardness in excess of 500 Brinell and high impact and abrasion resistance. A preferred alloy comprises Mn 3À2% C 2-4% Si 0-2% Cu 0À9% Mo 0À2% with the balance being Fe, apart from impurities such as S and P.
