Abstract
A crushing element, e.g. a roll, consists of martensitic cast iron presenting a definite chill, and having a hard wear-resistant face and a tough ductile backing containing spheroidal graphite, the cast iron containing 3.4 to 4.2 per cent C, 0.6 to 1.1 per cent Si, 3.5 to 5.0 per cent Ni, 0.4 to 1 per cent Cr, 0.1 to 0.6 per cent Mn, and enough Mg, not exceeding 0.1 per cent, to form spheroidal graphite in the backing, the balance being essentially all Fe. Up to 2 per cent Cu, 0.5 per cent Mo, 0.2 per cent P may also be present, the S being usually less than 0.02 per cent. In manufacture, the iron must be inoculated with e.g. Si in amount 0.2 to 0.6 per cent by weight of the molten metal.
