Abstract

An alloy suitable for making piston rings comprises .C.1.5-4.0% .Si.3.3-6.0% .B.0.0015-0.1% .Mn.0.2-5% .S.0.2% max .P.0.6% max .Al.0.2% max .Bi.0.2% max .Ti.0.2% max .Cr.2.0% max .optionally Mo.0.2-0.6% the balance being iron and has a microstructure the balance being iron and has a microstructure containing hypereutectoid carbon present as free carbides with graphitic carbon in nodular or near nodular form. The cast alloy may be held at 950 DEG C. for one hour, cooled in a furnace to 600 DEG C. and then air cooled.
