Abstract

An iron alloy, for casting piston-rings or cylinders from which piston-rings may be cut, has the following composition:- .Mn.0.5% .C.3.3% .Si.trace to 2.4% .P.trace to 0.3% .Cr.0.5 to 0.7% .Mo.0.5 to 0.75% .with Fe.balance except for ..impurities such as 0.05% S For a cylinder cast, which is subsequently divided into rings, the structure of the cast is of fine peartite with dissemination of carbides and fine graphite; for individually cast rings, the structure additionally contains troostite. The rings may be heat-treated at 900 DEG C. for 2 hours and cooled in oil to give a fine martensite structure. Further heating at 300 DEG C. is preferred to produce acicular structure prior to machining using a mandrel (see Group XXII).
