Abstract

A vehicle brake part which is subjected to wear by sliding friction consists of an austenitic cast iron comprising:- <TABS:1085715/C6-C7/1> the balance apart from impurities and incidental elements (e.g. S 0.06% and Si 2.3%), being iron. At least some of the carbon is present in a free form. The alloy may be annealed at 800 DEG - 1000 DEG C. followed by accelerated or unaccelerated cooling.
