Abstract

A steel for use in bearings comprises:- .C.0.6-0.8%.preferably 0.67-0.8% .Mu.0.3-0.8%.preferably 0.3-0.75% .Si.up to 0.5%.preferably up to 0.4% .Ni.0.5-1.5%.preferably 0.75-1.0% .Cr.0.1-0.45%.preferably 0.12-0.4% .Mo.0.05-0.35%.preferably 0.1-0.3% .Al.up to 0.5%. the balance, apart from incidental impurities, being iron. The steels of the invention may be heat treated as follows:- 1. Heat to a temperature above the Ae1 point but below the Acm point for long enough to form a fine uniform carbide dispersion in an austenite matrix e.g. at 1365-1390 DEG F. for 1 hour per inch of section. 2. Cool to 1200-1250 DEG F. at a rate of 10-25 DEG F. per hour. 3. Austenize at 1475-1600 DEG F. and 4. Quench.
