Abstract
A process of manufacturing articles from a steel comprising 0.08-0.2 per cent C, 0.6-5.0 per cent Cr, and 0.15-1.2 per cent Al the balance being iron and unavoidable impurities comprises subjecting the article to a carbide diffusing treatment at a temperature close to but below that of the a-g transformation, the temperature being between 730 and 800 DEG C. The time of treatment depends on the thickness of metal and may be 3 hours per 1/2 inch for rolled articles and 8 hours per 1 inch for cast or forged articles. The carbide diffusing treatment may be followed by a further treatment comprising quenching from 950-1080 DEG C. and tempering at 600-700 DEG C., the steel need not be cooled before heating to 950-1080 DEG C. The steel may have the following analysis:-C 0.08-0.2 per cent, Cr. 0.6-5.0 per cent, Al 0.15-1.2 per cent, Mn 0.3-1.2 per cent, Si 0.1-0.6 per cent Mo 0-0.5 per cent, V 0-1.0 per cent, Ti 0-1.0 per cent, Ni 0.2 per cent max., Cu 0.4 per cent max., S 0.03 per cent max., P 0.04 per cent max., N 0.02 per cent max., O 0.01 per cent max., balance Fe. B, and Ce may also be present in amount 0.005-0.01 per cent. It is stated that the steel after the treatment of the invention is resistant to hydrogen sulphide corrosion and is suitable for use as oil well tubing.
