Abstract

A steel comprising:- .C.0.15 - 1.0% .Mn.0.25 - 3.0% .Si.1 - 2.5% .Mo.0.5 - 3% .Cu.1 - 3% .V.0.2 - 1% the balance, apart from impurities, and residuals such as Cr 0.05% and Ni 0.01%, being iron is "ausformed" by austenetizing above the AC3 point, quenching to an intermediate temperature (e.g. 400 DEG -700 DEG C.), working the steel in the metastable austenitic state followed by quenching and tempering. The first quench may be in air, a metal bath, or a salt bath or may be a gas chill (e.g. argon).
