Abstract

A nitride bearing steel for high temperature cementation consists of:- .C.0.05 -0.25%, .Si.0.15 -0.40%, .Mn.less than 1.00%, .precipitated AlN.0.04 -0.18%, .metallic Al (in solution).0.001-0.05%, .with or without. .one or more of Ni.0.1 -4.5%, .Cr.0.4 -2.5%, .Mo.0.10-1.0%, the balance being iron and incidental impurities such as Cu (e.g. 0.19%), P and S. The AlN may be partly replaced by a nitride of Ti, Zr, Be and/or B, the total content of the latter elements being e.g. 0.1-0.2% Ti, 0.01-0.2% Zr, 0.01-0.2% Be and 0.002-0.2% B. The steel may be subjected to cementation at above 950 DEG C. or even 1100 DEG C., followed by quenching from 930 DEG C. and tempering at 180 DEG C. Specification 988,704 is referred to.
