Abstract
A process for heat treating unalloyed or low alloy steel containing 0.03 to 0.12 per cent aluminium nitride made in ingots of 1000 kgs or greater comprises maintaining the aluminium and nitrogen in solution by accelerated cooling of the steel from the solidifying to 1000 DEG C., the aluminium nitride being formed only below this temperature by a precipitation heat treatment, after which the steel is normalized one or more times. The steel may be given a solution heat treatment at at temperature depending on the nitrogen content before the accelerated cooling which is at a rate exceeding 90 DEG C. per minute. The precipitation hardening may be carried out between A3 and 950 DEG C., the temperature depending on the aluminium/nitrogen ratio of the steel. The normalizing treatment may be replaced by a treatment comprising varying the temperature several times in the A1-A3 range.
