Abstract

A steel alloy, suitable for the structural parts of aircraft, p has a composition within the following range Ni 1.5-3.5 per cent, Cr 0.7-1.5 per cent, Mo 0.1-0.5 per cent, C 0.35-0.45 per cent, Si 1.3-2.0 per cent, Mn 0.5-1.0 per cent, Al 0.02-0.1 per cent, Fe and impurities the balance. The alloy may also contain V not exceeding 0.1 per cent. The shaped part may be heated in the range 1500-1650 DEG F. to cause austenite to form, then rapidly cooled and tempered in the range 400-600 DEG F. to relieve stress.
