Abstract
Steel alloys of improved castability have compositions within the following range in per cent by weight .C.0.12-0.25 per cent .Si.0.25-0.5 per cent .Mn.0.5-1.8 per cent .V.0.05-0.2 per cent .N.0.015-0.028 per cent .Al.0.03-0.07 per cent .Fe.the remainder The alloy may also contain up to 0.5 per cent each of Ni, Mo and Cr. Al and N are maintained in solution by accelerated cooling of the casting to 1000 DEG C., e.g. in a continuous casting process or by rapid rolling of the casting down to thin dimensions. Alternatively intermediate or final products may be solution heat treated and then cooled rapidly to 1000 DEG C. The steel is then subjected to one or more normalizing treatments between A3 and 950 DEG C. In an example the latter treatment comprises normalizing at 930 DEG C. for 1 hour, cooling in air, reheating to 930 DEG C. for 1/2 hour, cooling in air, annealing at 680 DEG C. for 1 hour and cooling in air.
