Abstract

A low alloy steel for die casting dies has the following composition by weight:- .C............0.35 to 0.45% .Mn..........0.65 to 1.25% .Si..........up to 1% .Cr..........1 to 2% .Mo..........0.15 to 1% .V............0.05 to 0.5% .B............0.0005 to 0.005% .P............up to 0.05% .S............up to 0.2% .Fe and impurities as balance..... The steel may be hardened to at least Rockwell C 34 after hot working by normalizing at a temperature of up to 1800 DEG F. prior to air quenching. The normalized steel may also be oil quenched from 1550 DEG F. and tempered at 400-1150 DEG F. for one hour.
