Abstract

An air hardening alloy suitable for use as a forming die has a composition, in per cent by weight, within the following range: .C.0.5-0.6 .Mn.1.5-2.5 .Si.1.25-2.5 .Cr.3.0-4.0 .W.0.75-1.5 .Ni.1.0-2.0 .V.0.75-1.5 .Fe.the balance Die stock is formed at a temperature of 2050-2100 DEG F., annealed at about 1475 DEG F. being held at that temperature for about one hour, cooled to about 1275 DEG F. and held at that temperature for about four hours, cooled to room temperature, reheated to about 1275 DEG F. and held at that temperature for about six hours and cooled to room temperature.
