Abstract

An alloy steel for use in backer blocks for dies contains in percentage by weight .C.0.3-0.5 .Mn.0.8-1.7 .Si.0.8-2 .Cr.1.6-3 .V.0.2-0.8 .Mo.0.5-1 .Ni.0 -0.3 residual impurities .Cu.0 -0.3 residual impurities .Co.0 -0.2 residual impurities .W.0 -0.2 residual impurities .S.0 -0.15 .Fe.bal The steel is air cooled from the austenitizing temperature (1850 DEG F. is exemplified) and tempered at 1000 DEG or 1050 DEG F. for 2 hours, followed by air cooling and a further period of 2 hours at the tempering temperature.
