Abstract

An alloy contains at least 16% Ni, at least 12.5% Co, 0-6% Nb, 0-12% Ta, 0.5-1.5% Ti, 0-1% of each of Si, Mn and Al, 0-0.2% C, 0-0.1% Ca, the balance being at least 31% Fe and impurities. The percentages of Ni and Co are governed by the relationship 1.235 Ni+Co=55.8 to 66.8, and the percentages of Nb and Ta by the relationship Nb+0.5 Ta= 2.4 to 6. Cu up to 1%, S and P each up to 0.05% and Cr, Mo and W each up to 1% may also be present. The alloy may be hot worked, annealed at a temperature in the range 1400-2100 DEG F., rapidly cooled, cold worked to an extent not greater than that equivalent to a reduction in area of 45% on cold rolling and then age hardened in the range 1100-1300 DEG F. The cold working may be omitted. In examples, the use of a heat treatment at 1500 DEG F. or 1600 DEG F. for 1 hour followed by water quenching follows the cold working and precedes hardening for 5 hours at 1200 DEG F. The alloys may be used for making resilient articles such as springs, pressure sensitive elements or vibratory reeds, electro-mechanical filters, magnetically responsive elements, diaphragms and bellows.
