Abstract

An austenitic stainless steel which is workable in the pre-hardened condition and which may be hardened by heat treatment has the following composition in percentages by weight Cr 12 to 30, Ni 2 to 7, Mn 4 to 16, V 0.5 to 2.0, C 0.2 to 1.5, N 0 to 0.75, W 0 to 4, Mo 0 to 4, Cu 0 to 4, Nb 0 to 1.5, P 0.05 maximum, S 0.05 maximum, Si 0.7 maximum, Fe the balance with impurities. The steel is solution heat-treated at 2000 to 2100 DEG F. for half an hour, water quenched, fabricated and hardened at 1300 DEG F. for e.g. 10 hours and water quenched.
