Abstract

A nickel steel containing 18-30% Ni, at least 1% Ti with or without Al, the total amount of Ti and Al being 1.5-3%, not more than 2% Nb, from 0-0.1% B, 0-0.1% Zr, up to 0.1% C, 0-20% Co, 0-0.25% V, 0-1% Mn, 0-0.5% Si, and 0-0.1% Ca, the balance being Fe and impurities, is heat treated to produce a martensitic structure and then aged for 1/4 -24 hours at 260-650 DEG C. The steel is solution treated for at least 1/4 hour at 760-1175 DEG C. and for steels containing more than 24% Ni a preliminary ageing at 590-760 DEG C. for 1-24 hours is needed. Final ageing is then effected preferably at a maximum of 540 DEG C. The preferred composition contains less than 0.05% C and the Nb content is at least ten times the carbon content. The impurities such as S, P and N should not exceed 0.05% and the total of Cr and Mo should not exceed 2%. Specification 948,355 is referred to.
