Abstract
Stainless steels, having less than 15% of delta ferrite in their microstructures when air cooled after heat treatment at 1050 DEG C. and having a martensitic transformation range between 30 and-90 DEG C., contain C 0,07-0,16%, Cr 14,0-17,5%, Ni 3,5-4,5%, N not over 0,05% and Mn with or without one or more of Si, W and Mo in amounts such that Mn + 11/7 Si + W + 2/3 Mo = 2,5 to 3,5, the Cr and C contents being related so that Cr + 100 C=23,5 to 30. Other elements normally added to stainless steels may also be present thus the alloys may contain up to 0,2% each of one or more of the elements V, Nb, Al Ti and Co. Cu in amount from 1% to 4% may be present provided the relationship Mn + 11/7 Si + W + 2/3 Mo + 1/2 Cu = 2,5 to 3,5 is satisfied. The alloy may be solution treated at 900 DEG C.-1100 DEG C.
