Abstract

A precipitation-hardenable stainless steel has the following percentage composition:-Cr 11 - 13 Ni 9 - 11 Mo 1.5 - 3 Ti 0.1-0.5 and/or Nb 0.05-1 Al 0.5-1.6 C up to 0.03 Mn 0-0.2 Si 0-0.2 Fe and impurities the balance, the composition being further restricted such that (a) 0.8 Cr + Ni + Mo lies between 20 and 23 (b) Al + Ti is not less than 1.9 and (c) the ratio of Ni to Al + Ti is at least 5:1. After solution treatment at 870-980 DEG C the steel is air cooled (with optional refrigeration and/or cold working) to bring it to the martensitic condition and then aged at 425-540 DEG C.
