Abstract

A tough steel alloy having a good resistance to wear has a composition, in per cent by weight in the following range C 0.2-0.5, Mn 0.15-2.5, Si 0.1-2.0, P 0.0.05, S 0-0.07, one or more of Cr, Mo and W 0-5.0, Ni 0-4.0, B 0.0005-0.005, rare earth metals 0.0015 - 0.5 Fe the balance Ti may also be added to the melt, prior to the addition of B and rare earth metals, to fix nitrogen present as titanium nitride, preferably Ti is present in amount 0.0005-0.02%. The alloy may be normalized in the range 870-1040 DEG C., hardened in the range 815-925 DEG C. for low carbon alloys and in the range 790-900 DEG C. for higher carbon alloys, and water quenched The alloy is then tempered in the range 38 DEG C. to less than 315 DEG C. and air cooled.
