Abstract
A method of manufacturing an engineering part required to retain high hardness at elevated temperatures comprises selecting an alloy of the following composition, Cr 16-25 per cent; Co 0-40 per cent; Mo 3-17 per cent; Al 3-9 per cent; Ti 0-4 per cent; Ni and impurities, the balance, and in which the sum Mo + 2 Al + 4 Ti is above 19 and does not exceed 25, casting an engineering part from the alloy, solution treating it at 1,050-1,250 DEG C for 2-20 hours, machining it to its final shape, and precipitation-hardening it at 700-1,000 DEG C for 2-50 hours. The alloy may also contain up to 10 per cent V; up to 4 per cent Nb; up to 5 per cent Fe; up to 2 per cent Mn; up to 1.5 per cent Si; up to 0.5 per cent C; up to 0.25 per cent N and up to 0.5 per cent in total of one or more of Ca, Mg, Ce and rare earth metals. Specifications 583,845, 607,616, 620,676, 666,399 and 666,400 are referred to.
