Abstract

A ferritic alloy steel having high scale resistance and creep resistance up to about 700 DEG C. has a composition C 0,05-0,5 per cent, Cr 8,0-17,0 per cent, Mo and/or W 0,4-4,0 per cent in total, N 0,01-0,25 per cent, Si 0,1-2,0 per cent, Mn 0,1-4,0 per cent, at least three carbide formers including Ti and selected from Ti, V, Nb, Ta, Hf and Zr 0,05-4,0 per cent, the remainder of the alloy being Fe and unavoidable impurities and the proportion of carbide formers being such as will lead to the formation of face centred cubic carbides. The alloy may also contain one or more of the following elements Ni up to 2,0 per cent, B up to 0,5 per cent, Co up to 10,0 per cent, Cu up to 2,0 per cent. An example is referred to containing C 0,16, Si 0,42, Mn 1,17, Cr. 10,4, Ni 0,2 Mo 0,52, V 0,25, Ti 0,11, B 0,015, N 0,054, Cu 0,16, W less than 0,01, Co less than 0,03, Nb 0,2, all figures being percentages by weight, which, in the form of a disc was quenched from 1,250 DEG C. and tempered for 48 hours at 650 DEG C.
