Abstract

The hot working properties of stainless steel, containing at least 10 per cent Cr and at least 40 per cent Fe, are improved by melting the steel to specification and adding, during or after the finishing of the steel to specification, a boron-containing ingredient from the group boron pre-alloys, boric oxides, borates and rasonnite. The method is particularly suitable for steels containing 10-35 per cent Cr, up to 50 per cent Ni, up to 20 per cent Mn, up to 5 per cent Si, up to 50 per cent Co, up to 10 per cent Mo and/or W, up to 10 per cent Cu, up to 5 per cent Al and up to 5 per cent in total of Nb, Ta, V, Zr, Ti and the boron-containing ingredient should be sufficient to impart a B content of 0.00005-0.004 per cent to the finished steel. The boron-containing ingredient is preferably added together with at least one deoxidizing alloy, e.g. ferro-titanium, calcium-silicon, &c., to the steel in the ladle. A boron-containing pre-alloy consisting of: B 3-4 per cent; Si 40 per cent, Fe the remainder is referred to.
