Abstract
An iron-base casting is made by preparing an iron-base melt containing Cr 10-30 per cent and Mn 10-20 per cent, subjecting the melt to a pressure of at least one atmosphere above ambient, preferably in an inert gas, alloying the melt under this pressure with N in amount from 0.3 to 1.0 per cent till the ratio Cr : N is between 70 and 25, casting the melt into a mould while still under pressure and abstracting heat sufficiently rapidly to cause solidification without substantial ebullition of gas, the relative amounts of austenite formers and ferrite formers in the alloy being such as to result in a substantially completely austenitic structure. The N may be added as such or may be derived from cyanides, cyanamides, ammonia or nitrogen-bearing alloys with Fe or Fe-Cr. The alloy may also contain Si up to 3 per cent, Ni up to 8 per cent, W or Mo up to 6 per cent and V up to 0.5 per cent.
